Trausch/Slaughter Residence
Pacifica, CA
Completed 2009
Originally built in 1964, this existing residence had small, dark bedrooms and a landlocked kitchen that was blocked off from the living room by an unused brick fireplace.
Removing the fireplace allowed the kitchen to open up to an expanded living room and the views beyond. The existing 8-foot high ceilings of the kitchen and living room are relieved by the creation of a 12-foot high pop-up clerestory above a new wall of windows on the northern side of the living room. Lining the walls and ceiling of the clerestory is a continuous ribbon of Western Red Cedar siding, demarcating the extent of the addition.
